Teacher Preparation:

Preview site for layout and article lengths and appeal. Prepare comparison to actual newspaper for layout and sections etc.

 

Steps for learners:

Description of pre-computer/classroom activities (preparation)

  1. If available, bring in actual newspaper to re-familiarize with sectional breakdown of paper.
  2. Review/learn reading skills of Main Idea, Summary, Inference/Making Predictions, and Vocabulary and Context Clues.

Description of computer/online activities

  1. Locate URL
  2. Select section of interest or applicability.
  3. Read article.
  4. State main idea. (write)
  5. Summarize in writing the article.
  6. Make predictions based on the article.
  7. List and define unfamiliar words using context clues.

Description of follow up activities

  1. Present article, summaries, predictions, and vocab orally to class.
  2. Orally discuss feelings about Internet activity.
  3. Compare online newspaper to actual newspaper.
